Speakers Bureau: The WAGV Speakers Bureau delivers WAGV's violence prevention workshops and outreach activities to high-risk youth and their families in communities throughout LA County. These programs are essential to promoting the health and well-being of our communities.
Through our Speakers Bureau, we train gun-violence survivors and other concerned stakeholders so that they can deliver compelling messages. Their personal stories bring "heart" to the message, Our survivors - people who have lost a loved one to gun violence or survived a gun-shot wound themselves - tell us that WAGV helped save their lives by providing them an opportunity to turn grief into positive action. The information relayed by our staff who deliver the presentations with the survivors, includes statistics, information about sensible legislation, information about storing guns safely, gang violence, youth issues and more. This brings the "head" to the message.
Speakers visit schools, parenting classes and community organizations to share their personal stories of gun violence. Our interactive youth-violence prevention workshop, "Dodgin' the Bullet," encourages youth participation in the gun-violence prevention movement. "Keepin' Them Safe," an interactive educational workshop for parents of at-risk youth, provides the parents with information on how to protect their children from gun violence.
Online Victims Memorial: Our memorial provides a place (free) for friends and family members to honor the memories of their loved ones killed by firearms.
Publications: Our booklet, "How to Talk With Kids About Guns" in English and Spanish is a resource for parents and families on the issue of guns and youths.
Legislative Advocacy: We work to ensure the passage of sensible gun legislation that limits the accessibility of guns to youth and criminals, promotes safer firearm mechanisms and supports law enforcement.
