I’m feeling empowered and inspired by the students of Parkland and students across the nation who are demanding a ban on assault style weapons and crying out for gun control. Yes, they’ve said it and I’m repeating it … gun control.

For years, in an effort to reach out to moderate gun owners, gun violence prevention organizations have refrained from using the term gun control and have, instead, used phrases like “gun safety legislation” and “strong and effective gun legislation.”

Moderate gun owners have, indeed, come to support — as does a significant majority of Americans — universal background checks and a ban on assault-style weapons. But has this support come from a change in our language or because the daily slaughter of our children and families is finally too much to bear? It is wrong to think that our current terminology doesn’t mean legislation that controls firearms, their purchase, and their use — and I believe that everyone, including moderate gun owners, understands that.

So let’s stop being apologetic and join Emma González, David Hogg, and other student activists in their demand for gun control!

What Can You Do Today? Even if you have called your Senators before, call them again today:

  • You want a real and expanded universal background check that includes a background check on the transfer of firearms between family and friends. (This will impact hunters who frequently loan guns to family and friends when hunting. We believe that protecting our communities outweighs the inconvenience of a trip to a licensed gun seller to run a background check.)
  • You want them to vote no on National Concealed Carry Reciprocity — a law that will allow the weak gun laws of one state to override the strong gun laws of another state.
  • You want them to support Senator Dianne Feinstein’s proposal, S. 2095, to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines.

and be sure you let your Senators know that you are NO LONGER APOLOGETIC for wanting to protect your children, family, and communities! You want gun control, NOW!
