Terrorists – 2; Americans – 0

Yesterday the Senate voted. Just days after 49 lives were lost to gun violence in Orlando, both common sense gun safety amendments – Senator Feinstein’s No Fly/No Buy amendment and Senator Murphy’s Background Check amendment — were defeated.

It’s on the record. Here is who voted AGAINST blocking the sale of guns to suspected terrorists – Feinstein Amendment:

Here’s who voted AGAINST Senator Murphy’s amendment that would close background check loopholes!

Thank you for making calls and sending emails encouraging the Senate to vote with a conscience! Now let them know what you think of their votes!

Take 1 Minute, Right Now, Before 2 PM PDT, to Save Lives!

On Monday, June 20, the U.S. Senate will consider and vote on two common-sense gun violence prevention measures as amendments to an appropriations bill. These are important, bi-partisan first steps to keep guns out of the hands of abusers and others who pose a threat to society. One amendment, introduced by Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, and previously proposed by Senator Schumer of New York, requires background checks for all guns sales. Currently, approximately 34% of gun sales are completed without background checks. The other amendment, sponsored by Senator Feinstein of California, prohibits people from owning firearms who have been put on a “no fly” list because they have been identified as potential threats to the safety of our nation.

THE SENATE IS EXPECTED TO CONSIDER […]

June 2nd, National Gun Violence Awareness Day

On June 1st, we will gather at L.A. City Hall where the City Council will officially declare June 2nd to be Gun Violence Awareness Day in Los Angeles.

On Thursday, June 2nd, join Women Against Gun Violence and a broad-based coalition of organizations, community members and activists across the United States that believe we can all do more to save American lives from gun violence.

Do two simple things:

1. Wear something orange in memory of all gun violence victims. It can be a t-shirt, pin, tie or head-to-toe blaze orange regalia. Take a selfie, and share it online with the hashtag #wearingorange or email your selfie to wagv@wagv.org and we’ll share it for you!

Arguing About Guns with Uncle Fred

We all have an “Uncle Fred” or a friend who speaks with authority — repeating NRA talking points as though they were true. Below are some of the things Uncle Fred will say, but you can respond with the facts. Learn them and be prepared for your next conversation:

“President Obama is coming for our guns”

FACT: Gun rights have expanded under President Obama’s administration. You can now bring guns onto trains and into national parks. And if the President is trying to take guns away, he’s really bad at it. He’s had 7 years in office, and more guns were sold during his Presidency than any other time in recent history.

“Guns don’t kill people, people kill people”

FACT: People with guns kill people. The same week as […]

Summary of the President’s Executive Orders to Address Gun Violence

The President is committed to using every tool at the Administration’s disposal to reduce gun violence. Unfortunately, many of the gaps in our country’s gun laws can only be fixed through legislation. That is why it is important for us to call, write, and email our legislators to demand that they take action to keep our families and communities safe! […]

Angel of Peace Awards

On September 21, 2015, the Violence Prevention Coalition of Greater Los Angeles held their Angel of Peace Awards. Our founder, Ann Reiss Lane, was presented with the Angel Award by L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer, our partner and a huge advocate for gun violence prevention. Mr. Feuer praised Ann for over 20 years of advocacy and legislation work, and called her “the most important voice in legislation and gun violence prevention in the city of Los Angeles.” Ann’s Angel award itself is a sculpture of an angel created by artist Lin Evola and made from melted down guns.

Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer had this to say about Ann: “The lives you’ve saved, the communities you’ve helped, the legislation you’ve championed, the alliances you’ve fostered, […]
