Yesterday the Senate voted. Just days after 49 lives were lost to gun violence in Orlando, both common sense gun safety amendments – Senator Feinstein’s No Fly/No Buy amendment and Senator Murphy’s Background Check amendment — were defeated.

On Monday, June 20, the U.S. Senate will consider and vote on two common-sense gun violence prevention measures as amendments to an appropriations bill. These are important, bi-partisan first steps to keep guns out of the hands of abusers and others who pose a threat to society. One amendment, introduced by Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, and previously proposed by Senator Schumer of New York, requires background checks for all guns sales. Currently, approximately 34% of gun sales are completed without background checks. The other amendment, sponsored by Senator Feinstein of California, prohibits people from owning firearms who have been put on a “no fly” list because they have been identified as potential threats to the safety of our nation.

On June 1st, we will gather at L.A. City Hall where the City Council will officially declare June 2nd to be Gun Violence Awareness Day in Los Angeles.

On Thursday, June 2nd, join Women Against Gun Violence and a broad-based coalition of organizations, community members and activists across the United States that believe we can all do more to save American lives from gun violence.

On September 21, 2015, the Violence Prevention Coalition of Greater Los Angeles held their Angel of Peace Awards. Our founder, Ann Reiss Lane, was presented with the Angel Award by L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer, our partner and a huge advocate for gun violence prevention.
